Cell phones are now used for many things including texting, gps system, a music player, a event scheduler/email and of course a talking advice but when it was first invented it could only be used for calling people. How has cell phones become an addiction and also a distraction in people’s life. I think the main problem here is texting. People now go to work, school and even social events blocking out the rest of the world while texting and talking on their phones like nothing is going on around them. Why would you think this is bad? Well when you think about how much you personally text in a day, you can say that you could have gotten a lot more work done in a day without texting at all, believe me. People don’t realize just how much more time they are taking out of their days to text instead of doing more valuable things. As you see in some of these videos these teenagers even text people sitting right next to them, at special occasions like their own birthday etc. When you see teenagers with a texting addiction you can see that when they actually talk they do not have good speaking /communication skills because they are so used to speaking there words and thoughts through texts instead of verbally. Our generation today is bound to have trouble getting jobs not only because of the economy but because of their addiction to texting, they do not know how to communicate with the outside world and show their emotion and feelings into something that is real unlike a cell phone that is plastic. Some psychologists say that internet and texting is not an addiction but a compulsive disorder which I personally don’t see a big difference between the two. Psychologists can’t see the negative it does inside the brain but I think we can only see the negative it causes from the outside actions. They say that these compulsive actions to texting and internet use can lead to bad health and poor work performances. Another site I visited they talked about technology addiction being alot like a gambling addiction coming with negative consequences in your life.

Another addiction I find is the internet and the use of Pornography. Many men and even women today watch it very often, which is another thing interfering with your life. This is another debate wether or not it is an addiction or just a compulsive thing, but just like any other addiction it can take control of your life and destroy it in many ways like loosing a job, lose of sleep, divorce, having no money etc. People engage so much on the fantasy world and porn that real life is just as satisfying for them.

An addiction that hurts many teenagers and also middle aged men is video games. As shown in this video, video games can lead to anger and cursing at a very young age. People who play games isolate themselves from social contact causing them to also have trouble with their communication skills. People who play games also have a false sense of reality because they are always playing in a animated world.

What confuses me is when psychologists say its not an addiction but a compulsive thing, well isn’t drinking and doing drugs also compulsive also. A compulsion is like an obsession so whats the difference with drugs, alcohol, texting, videogaming?Are they all cumpulsive acting or are they addictions, I still stick to my beliefs of technology activities being an addiction but I also can say they are very compulsive.

Technology became a part of my life ever since I was in elementary school when I learned to use a computer in the third grade. It was commonly used to play math and spelling games to expand our knowledge. My mom didn’t understand why we were using computers to learn but she is very old fashion. Then in the sixth grade I just had to have a cell phone, it was the cool thing to have. When I look back at this I realize that technology was brought into my life as something that was normal for everyday use. So I have to say that using technology became a necessity, without them it would become harder to communicate.

I use several types of technology everyday in my life, from listening to my ipod, watching T.V, and going on the internet to using my cell phone I have to admit that my life is corrupted with technology; Without even just of these I feel incomplete. In my life though I can personally say that the most important form of technology in my life that tops off all of these is the internet. The internet I believe was invented to communicate with others and to research information that you couldn’t find otherwise. Some people may use the internet for gaming, doing school work, even looking at porn, buying clothes, or paying bills but I use it for the form of communicating with friends and researching for homework problems. Now that I am in college classes ask for homework to be done online on a personal website called blackboard, where all your grades are also posted.

The technology I use the most in my everyday life is msn instant messenger. This instant messenger became a big part of my life about a year and a half ago when I met my boyfriend. I met him in person then to find out that he lived in another country, so we needed to find a form of communication that would make it easier for this long distance relationship to work. Msn Instant Messenger lets you not only talk live but also share video chat, making the distance between two people just a little easier. There is a down side to this though because now that we share this relationship it makes me rely on this technology in everyday life just to make this relationship work. I can’t go a day without looking at the computer screen; even though I can be doing much more productive things. Forty years ago it wouldn’t have been possible to have a long distance relationship because there was no internet or instant messenger to talk to people around the world, if you wanted to talk to someone very far you would probably just write a letter, now with the internet you can use many different websites to communicate with the people in your life that you can’t see face to face everyday.

The internet has also been very important in my life for researching and finding important information that I couldn’t find otherwise. The internet has been the most important thing to me since beginning school because without it I would have to learn the techniques of using the library and other resources to get the knowledge that I have today.There is so much you can learn just from looking it up on a computer and most of it is free just to look up. By looking up information online it is much more convenient then looking it up in a book or encyclopedia. There is a lot of data added to the internet every day for people to look up information. The internet is also very useful for buying plane tickets and paying bills so you don’t have to waste your time driving to the place.

The second important device of technology that I use is the cell phone. The cell phone has become a very important device in everyone’s life since 1995, without it we cannot go on with our daily lives. The first time I got a cell phone was in the sixth grade and that was for my personal safety while walking home, now today I use it to actually communicate with people and talk with family and friends. Now that I am in college it is harder to get to a computer anytime I want to talk to a family member or friend so I have my cell phone to send out a quick text to tell them I miss them. Cell phones also have internet on them so if you have a quick thing to look up it is very reliable. The ability of calling and texting a person is a good feeling to have when you are far from them.

I chose to use power point slides for my Vodcast which I included pictures and text in each of the slides, I didn’t include any sounds because I thought it would make the power point more serious if I didn’t add music and the captions say it all. The technology i picked was decided because its a nice and easy form to use when trying to make a point and in my case the point I was trying to get across was happiness, and things that made me happy.
